Sydney Jeep driver escapes engine inferno

The owner of a Jeep Grand Cherokee has been forced to abandon their car in traffic after smoke started billowing out from under the bonnet.

9News Sydney reports the vehicle owner was uninjured.

The incident reportedly took place in Mount Druitt earlier today, with Fire and Rescue NSW confirming it responded to a car fire on Luxford Road.

The vehicle can be seen sitting in the middle of the road with smoke streaming from under the bonnet. Flames can also be seen both under the vehicle and near the firewall.

In a video taken later and shared on Reddit, the engine bay can be seen completely engulfed in flames.

Registration information shows this is a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped with the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6.

It’s unclear what caused this fire.

The WK2-series Grand Cherokee has been subject to numerous recalls, including one issued in 2022 for a defect with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler that can crack, potentially leading to a vehicle fire.
