Antonio Maíllo has the support of the absolute majority of the armed forces to lead Izquierda Unida

Antonio Maíllo will take over from Alberto Garzón as the new general coordinator of Izquierda Unida. The organization's former leader in Andalusia has won 53.4% support among the militants, more than the absolute majority, compared to the 23.4% received by Minister Sira Rego, who has no way to challenge the leadership.

The militant party's vote must be ratified this weekend in the organization's federal meeting, but having exceeded 50%, the remaining candidates may not agree to try to put together an alternative candidacy, such as the there has been speculation in recent days. Madrid coordinator Álvaro Aguilera has received 14.1% of support and former leader José Antonio García Rubio 8.3%.

In terms of the number of expressions of support, Maíllo received 4,463 votes; Rego, 1957; Aguilera, 1,178; and García Rubio 696. A total of 8,350 people participated, slightly more than those who attended the Sumar meeting on March 23. Participation in the last IU meeting, the one at which Garzón was re-elected, amounted to 7,467 votes.

Next Tuesday's primaries will therefore pave the way for Maíllo to become the new general coordinator of the organization, after an intensive campaign with four candidates and crossed by the debate on the relationship that Izquierda Unida should have with Sumar towards the future. Of all the candidates, the Andalusian is the only one who has firmly committed to maintaining his participation in the construction of a wide front.

“From the candidacy of Antonio Maíllo, we express our joy at the results and want to send from this first minute a message of hope for the stage that will start at IU. This assembly process serves to activate the organization and with all that energy we are going to build a time for a user interface more attached to the territory, to the conflict and to institutional work,” sources from Maíllo's team have conveyed after learning the results .

Rego immediately congratulated him in a message on social networks. “Congratulations buddy @MailloAntonio for the results obtained during the assembly process. As we said, we make ourselves available to build a strong and cohesive organization,” he wrote.
