Antiques Roadshow guest ‘ready to fall over’ as Marilyn Monroe dress worth six figures

Antiques Roadshow US saw an “iconic” Marilyn Monroe dress appraised, leaving its owner feeling “ready to fall over”.

The PBS series welcomed a guest to have his 1959 dress, worn by none other than film star Marilyn in the unforgettable movie Some Like It Hot.

As well as the glamorous fringed-out, he brought in a couple of photographs of Monroe wearing the item while dancing in one of the movie’s earlier scenes.

He explained that he got it from his costume designer friend Donfeld who obtained it from Western Costume Company.

Expert Beth Szescila gave further details about the dress and its designer who had a trick when it came to creating Monroe’s looks.

She added: “You can easily see Marilyn in action, where she’s wearing this dress and it’s really fabulous on her.”

As well as the dress itself and the photographs, Szescila showed off its label which clearly states that it was part of Orry-Kelly’s collection.

The expert went on to summarise: “Well this is an iconic dress from an iconic film, worn by one of the greatest sex symbols of the 20th Century.

“In an auction, I would not be surprised at all if it went for somewhere between $150,000 and $250,000.”

Clearly surprised, the guest laughed, holding his chest and said: “Oh, my…woah!”

Szescila added: “And actually, with the unpredictability of the market for this type of item, it would not surprise me at all if it went much higher.

“I’m just going to be conservative here because I don’t want to get you too excited.”

The guest reacted: “I’m about ready to fall over!”, with Szescila replying: “Oh well, please don’t!”

He then stated: “No you made me very happy, that’s great.”

Antiques Roadshow US is available to watch on CBS.
