The BBC has announced the guest cast for the return of the popular drama Shetland.

Famous actors Ian Hart and Vincent Regan will join series favourites Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell in the new series of BBC’s Shetland, as filming kicks off.

Based on the award-winning novels by crime writer Ann Cleeves, the new six-part series sees DI Calder now living on the Isles plunged into a complex case when a friend of Tosh’s goes missing.

This chilling story of disappearances and death leads Tosh and Calder on a winding investigation that blurs the line between personal and professional.

Vincent Regan is excited to join the cast of the much-loved BBC drama Shetland. He said: “I’m thrilled be joining the cast of Shetland which is such a beloved BBC drama. My character and his family are at the heart of this dark and twisting storyline and I’m looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds. The opportunity to visit the Shetland Isles was also a real pull to the part as well as working with the likes of Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell.”

Shetland has a huge fan base on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with the last series in 2023 pulling in an average of 7.0 million viewers. It’s super popular in Scotland too, where it was the second most-watched drama of the year.

The BBC has announced that there will be a ninth and tenth series of Shetland and they plan to start filming Series 10 in 2025.

The upcoming series of Shetland is being written by Paul Logue and Denise Paul. Louise V Say is producing Series 9, and it will be directed by Andrew Cumming and Ruth Paxton.

Gaynor Holmes, Kate Bartlett, Denise Paul, and Paul Logue are the executive producers for Silverprint Pictures.

Shetland is just one of the exciting BBC dramas filmed in Scotland set to come out this year. Others include Nightsleeper, Granite Harbour, and Lockerbie.

ITV Studios will handle the international distribution of Shetland.
