The 2024 BRIT Awards returned to our television screens for a night that saw new records being broken, as south London singer Raye took home six awards. However, fans have complained over a fairly major reason.
Some people have deemed the show a “fix” as Raye completely dominated the night, picking up six BRIT awards including artist of the year and album of the year.
The talented musician had previously smashed the nominations record of jointly held by Blur, Adele and Harry Styles and she was set up for a staggering seven nominations on the night.
As Raye continued to pick up award after award, she even brought her grandmother on stage when she won the gong for album of the year. She cried: “You just don’t understand what this means to me.”
However, many fans took to social media to slam the ceremony and said they were “sick” of Raye. One person complained: “FIX! Glad it’s the Brit awards tonight more like the Raye awards.”
A second chimed in: “I genuinely don’t know who Raye is and I couldn’t name a single song or album of hers. How can someone possibly win six awards when the majority of people I’ve seen commenting about it have no idea who she is either? No wonder people are calling it a fix!”
A third typed: “Who the heck is RAYE. Sick of hearing her name now. This has to be a fix. #BRITs” as a fourth said: “What an absolute fix. Should have been named the Raye awards. #brits.”
However, many fans defended the singer. One person said: “Big ups @raye at the @BRITs the major label messed her around & look at her shine now. Majors need to fix up & move forward with the scene otherwise they will get left behind. The indi label will take over the corporate washing machine.”
Only 18 months ago, Raye caused a music industry storm when she was finally released from her label, Polydor, after seven years. She publicly criticised the label after they refused to release her debut album, before she cut ties with them in July.
Fans were also complaining over the “awkward” crowd who attended the BRITs. The ceremony was hosted by Love Island host Maya Jama, radio presenter Roman Kemp and Radio One’s Clara Amfo.
As the hosts tried to get the party going, it seemed that their presenting skills weren’t taken well by the audience. One person moaned on X: “#BritAwards Can we just give the audience a few drinks. It might liven them up a bit.”
A second ranted online: “Sorry but #BRITAwards is an absolute s*** show this year. Half the artist never even heard of, crowd as dead as my social life, not understanding the hype over raye. Just not the same at all!”
A third also chimed in: “This has got to be the deadest Brit awards and the worst crowd ever! #BritAwards” as another commented: “Where is Kylie! #BritAwards p.s that crowd is awful #awkward.”
Big names such as Dua Lipa, Ellie Goulding, Calvin Harris and Kylie Minogue all took to the stage to give dazzling performances, and the BRITs even introduced a kiss cam to celebrities in the crowd.
