Chris Evans leaves listeners in tears after host’s ‘sad’ Virgin Radio co-star quits on-air

Chris Evans bid farewell to his co-star Rachel Horne who announced her departure.

The former Top Gear presenter left listeners devastated when he turned to his colleague who revealed she had sad news to share.

The co-host and newsreader revealed on (March 28) that she’ll be stepping down and said it was her final show.

Making the announcement live on air, Rachel said: “I am very sad to say that this is my last day on the show. I have loved my time with this team despite and even sometimes because of the 4am alarm. The peace of those early morning hours is very precious.

“We all have many roles in our lives and I am so lucky that mine include mom, wife, sister and friend. They’re all central to who I am but I’m also a big fan of work Rachel. She’s knowledgeable. She’s funny. She likes bright colours and small businesses and she makes sure you get your headlines on the important stories. Even when that news is something that’s difficult to blend with a family breakfast show. That’s the juggle she pulls off.”

Rachel thanked the Virgin Radio team adding they have been a “huge part of my life for the past five years”.

She concluded by thanking the radio listeners who have continued to tune into the Chris Evans Breakfast Show alongside co-host Vassos Alexander.

She said: “It’s all been for you, the listeners. You’re brilliant. You’re hilarious. You’re honest, you’re dedicated, and it has been an absolute privilege to serve you every day I’ve been on this show. Thank you deeply, truly thank you for your time, your energy, your input. Hopefully you’ll hear me again soon. Until then, make good choices.”

Giving her traditional yet emotional outro, the broadcaster added: “That’s your news on Virgin Radio.”

Fans flocked to Rachel’s Instagram page to share their disappointment over the news.

One wrote: “Very sorry to hear you are leaving, the three of you together made a fabulous team. It’s so important to have a nice voice to listen to and you do! Best wishes for the next stage and thanks for great listening it just will not be the same.”

Another commented: “No!!!! We will miss your beautiful, uplifting tones on the airwaves. You’ve been like a friend in our car, kitchen, garden for so long. Go forward with confidence knowing you are beyond fabulous darling.”

“I was literally crying whilst driving. I think the other drivers were thinking what’s happened. I will miss your voice and your laughter. Enjoy whatever you do, keep healthy, safe, but most of all, be happy. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart,” a third penned.

Another said: “Gutted you’re leaving, but thank you for the joy you’ve brought. Who’s gonna keep those boys in check now!”

“Your goodbye speech made me cry – I’ve loved listening to you. Who will be the voice of reason now? Keep being fabulous,” a fifth wrote.

Rachel joined BBC Radio 2 in March 2018, replacing Lynn Bowles as the new regular weekday morning travel news reporter. When Chris left the BBC for Virgin Radio UK in January 2019, she later joined the team.

The Chris Evans Breakfast Show airs weekdays from 6:30am on Virgin Radio
