Good Morning Britain halted for ‘breaking news’ as shaken Richard Madeley falls silent

Good Morning Britain was halted during Monday’s edition for a breaking news announcement, with Charlotte Hawkins apologising to her co-star Richard Madeley for pranking him with an April Fools joke.

The TV star pulled a prank on Richard as she tried on a fake pearl necklace, telling him that it was the real pearls worn by Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe. During the segment, guest Jane said: “I need to ask you not to touch the pearls.”

Charlotte laughed and went: “Ooh yes okay,” as Jane said: “That was once around Marilyn Monroe’s chops.” Richard then joked: “It would be awful if they unthreaded.”

Suddenly, the necklace snaps and pearls go flying everywhere, as Charlotte said: “Richard! You made that happen!” Her co-star was left visibly in shock with his mouth hanging open.

Charlotte then said: “Can I just confirm you’ve got that on camera – I was not touching it at the time!” Richard then said: “I don’t believe that happened.”

Later on, Richard then halts the show and said: “Oh, we have some breaking news. Marverine you have some news for us.” She then turns to the camera and says: “We have some breaking news to inform you.

“Just to inform you that the pearl necklace that we’ve had in the studio is completely worthless. Jane our curator is a brilliant actress and you’ve all been April fooled!”

Richard then laughed and said: “I literally said, ‘Wouldn’t it be weird if it unthreaded?'” The TV presenter then asked viewers to send in stories if they’ve ever been pranked with an April Fools joke at work.

Also during the programme, Richard and Charlotte spoke to Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts about his successful singing career. He was the first ever winner of the ITV talent show back in 2007.

The pair also spoke about the upcoming 14th series of Doctor Who, which is set to air in May and will show Ncuti Gatwa starting his travels as the Fifteenth Doctor alongside new companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson).

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6:30am on ITV and ITVX.
