ITV Lorraine halted as GMB’s Susanna Reid interrupts with ‘breaking news announcement’

Susanna Reid from Good Morning Britain surprised Lorraine Kelly on her show, Lorraine, with a “breaking news flash” on Monday, March 25. She stopped the ITV programme and left viewers puzzled as Tyler West’s chat with Lorraine suddenly went quiet and the camera switched to Susanna backstage.

Assuring viewers that their TVs were fine, Susanna said: “I am interrupting Lorraine’s programme, she doesn’t know anything about this because I have an absolutely huge announcement for her, I’ve got her very own breaking news flash to celebrate her 40 years of broadcasting. So I’ve come from the Good Morning Britain studio to the Lorraine studio next door with the very special announcement.”

She then let slip that Tyler West and Dr Hilary were in on the surprise, and the current segment was just a trick to keep Lorraine clueless. “Just a few seconds and I’ll break into Lorraine for her very own Lorraine moment,” Susanna said as she neared the studio.

As the doors opened, Lorraine was totally surprised when Susanna said: “Good Morning Lorraine, this has come as an enormous surprise, I’m very sorry but the conversation you were having with Tyler just then was a ruse because I have a very special announcement for you Lorraine Kelly.”

“What is going on?” asked a confused Lorraine while Susanna explained: “It doesn’t get much better or more deserved than this, I am here for a very special reason this morning because BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, will be celebrating your 40 years in broadcasting.

“We all know about the fantastic honour, of course, that your programme is nominated in the daytime category, but I have something else, unique and special to you because this is the first time that something like this has been announced on air.”

Susanna continued: “Congratulations Lorraine, your very own breaking news flash,” and then she added: “You’re not just an inspiration to viewers, you’re an inspiration to people like me, women in broadcasting.”

Following this, Susanna read out a note from the head of the BAFTA TV committee that said: “Lorraine Kelly displays a mastery of disarming guests with her warmth and relaxed approach and always manages to make the daily demands of live broadcasting look easy.

“She combines quick intelligent and genuine empathy, tackling tricky subjects with skill and sensitivity and uses her platform to raise awareness of things that really matter. We are honoured to present Lorraine with the BAFTA Special Award.”

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV1.
