ITV’s Peston pulled off off air as host declares show is ‘over’ after Ian Hislop row

ITV Peston was taken off air following a huge clash between Private Eye editor Ian Hislop and Tory MP Sir Jake Berry. It came as the two clashed over the Post Office scandal which has been making headlines this week.

As the pair had a heated clash, Robert Peston was forced to interject as he declared the programme was “over”, in a bid to get the pair to calm down as the showw as overrunning the scheduled time slot.

Hislop and Berry were engaged in a heated debate on the political programme, where host Robert Peston was forced to inform viewers the programme was “over” as the two men continued their fiery exchange. It comes after ITV aired a drama based on the events of the Post Office scandal, Mr Bates vs The Post Office.

The nation has been left shocked the by scandal, which occurred between 1999 and 2015. 700 Post Office branch managers were wrongly accused of theft after faulty software made it appear money was missing from their outlets.

Many were jailed and ended up bankrupted, and sadly, the mental health of many of the victims was seriously impacted and some ended up taking their own lives. Years later, many haven’t received an apology or compensation from the Post Office.

Hislop quizzed Berry over the shocking revelations coming out, which led to a heated exchange. He asked the MP why it had taken a television drama to prompt ministers into action to exonerate the victims.

“We can pass an emergency piece of legislation, a parliamentary pardon,” Berry explained.

“But why couldn’t you do it so long ago?” In fumed, adding: “The fact that it takes an ITV drama and suddenly, having been told their entire campaigning lives, ‘This is very difficult, you’ll have to go in front of a judge.’

“‘This is very, very expensive. Oh, this morning it isn’t, tomorrow we’ll pass legislation and you’re all exonerated.’

“I mean it is absolutely fatuous for this government to claim, ‘Hey, we’re really acting now.'”

The journalist continued: “Did nothing, did nothing the whole time!”

Raising his hand Berry fumed: “Sorry, no, that is-“

However Hislop cut in: “It is demonstrably true!”

“No, sorry, that is demonstrably complete and utter nonsense,” Berry replied.

Still furious, Hislop asked: “Why did you give her a CBE in 2019?” referring to former Post Office boss Paula Vennells.

“You talk over everyone else and you’ve been doing it the entire programme,” Hislop continued.

Peston cut in to announce: “That programme ends in 2019 with that court case. In the intervening period, £130 million plus has been paid out…” before abruptly ending the show.

Peston airs on Wednesday on ITV at 10.45pm.
