Singer James Morrison’s wife Gill Catchpole’s cause of death has been confirmed. She died by hanging at the age of 45, a coroner has been told today.
The mother-of-two was found at her Gloucestershire home on Friday morning, Coroner Roland Wooderson was told. James, 39, discovered his spouse upon entering the property, to which he had a key, after being contacted by a friend who was unable to gain access.
Paramedics and police were called and she was pronounced dead at 9.37am. The coroner stated that police were satisfied there were no suspicious circumstances involved.
Pathologist Dr Terry Jones carried out the post-mortem and gave the provisional cause of death as hanging. Mr Wooderson formally opened an inquest and adjourned it to a date to be fixed.
Gill was mother to the couple’s two daughters, Elsie, 15, and five-year-old Ada. She ran a cafe called the Cotswold Sandwich Box, in the village that the pair lived in.
The cafe was closed on Saturday afternoon with police cars parked outside.
A source told The Sun: “James is devastated and is being supported by his family.
“He is holding it together for their girls but has asked for the family to be left alone to grieve in private.”
A local also told the publication that Whitminster was in shock following the news.
They said: “The whole village is in complete shock at what has happened.
“Gill was a lovely woman and they were a beautiful family.”
The couple met when Catchpole moved into Morrison’s mother’s house while he was still working his way up as a singer.
Morrison, 39, has sold more than seven million records and is best known for the hits ‘You Give Me Something’ and ‘Broken Strings’.
