Jonnie Irwin details special diet which has ‘kept him alive’ during terminal cancer battle

As Escape to the Country star Jonnie Irwin continues to bravely battle incurable cancer, he has opened up about the diet that has helped “keep him alive”. The former A Place in the Sun presenter had defied doctors’ predictions after being given just one month to live.

The Channel 4 star shared his devastating cancer news back in November 2022, and has kept fans updated with his health journey since then. Appearing on the Conversations with Jane McLelland podcast, Jonnie spoke about his healthy eating regime.

The presenter, whose cancer has spread from his lungs to his brain, was interviewed by author Jane, who has written a book entitled How to Starve Cancer. During the podcast, Jane admitted she didn’t believe Jonnie would still be alive now, having seen the star looking very ill 12 months ago.

She said: “When I first met you back in January [2023] I honestly didn’t think you had long to go, to be honest.” Jonnie agreed: “I was so thin wasn’t I.”

Jonnie then went on to explain how he believes his diet has played a key part in proving his doctors wrong. The father-of-three said: “I’m convinced the reason I’m here is from a mixture of things.

“My diet – I don’t have a keto diet. I had a keto diet for about two years and I lost a lot of weight and I decided to have my own diet. More sensible, healthy, veggie smoothies in the morning, lots of veg, and a little fruit but not too much because I’m nervous about the sugar.

“But I know my liver likes fruit. I’m drinking a lot of tea and coffee because it’s good for my liver but you can’t just do one thing – you’ve got to adapt as well.

“When your liver’s playing up you’ve got to feed it what it wants, and that might be what is good in the whole.”

Janethen responded: “The thing is that all these things will actually work synergistically and it is a combination.”

Jonnie then noted: “Something’s just occurred to me – in the two years I’ve known you we’ve never discussed diet.”

Jane replied: “The reports that you and I have had in the national papers have always been because they look at How to Starve Cancer and they focus on the diet and actually that’s not it at all.”

Jonnie then claimed: “If I just did that then I wouldn’t be here. I don’t know where this outside criticism is coming from because I’ve read the book and we’ve had a good relationship, but we’ve never talked about a diet because that’s my responsibility and your expertise is I think in the off-label drugs and where your body performs with them and all the treatments I can get alongside it.”

At this point, Jane reiterated: “But again just to say I am not a doctor so I don’t prescribe the drugs. I say you’ve got to discuss this with your doctor to see if this would be suitable for you to have. I’m not treating you. All I do is provide education and information.”
