My Wife My Abuser shows how evil wife was caught abusing husband after decades of attacks

A chilling documentary, My Wife My Abuser, reveals the horrifying way Richard Spencer’s abusive wife Sheree was finally exposed after 20 years of physical attacks, threats, and financial control.

Throughout their marriage, 46-year-old Sheree subjected Richard, 47, to increasing levels of violence, starting with “pushing, shoving and slapping”. Over time, things got worse, with Sheree spitting on Richard, locking him out of the house, and even stabbing him with forks.

On one occasion, she hit him with a wine bottle so hard that it permanently disfigured one of his ears.

In a cunning attempt to prevent the father-of-three from seeking help, Sheree repeatedly threatened to tell the police that he was the one abusing her – even screaming for help in their seven-bedroom home near York, hoping neighbours would support any lies she told. However, what Sheree didn’t count on was that Richard had a good friend watching over him.

The Channel 5 documentary, My Wife My Abuser, uncovers the shocking way Sheree concealed her appalling abuse for two decades. The couple, who first met in a club in 2000, had installed a nanny cam following the birth of their eldest daughter in 2015.

Sheree’s husband Richard, who would hide his injuries with make-up, had started secretly recording the abuse, worried he’d need it as “insurance” if she tried to stop him from seeing their kids.

One night, Sheree, who worked as a senior project manager for HM Prison and Probation Service, called one of Richard’s friends saying her husband was drunk and she was scared of what he might do.

Richard’s friend quickly came over to their house. When he and Richard were alone, he asked about Richard’s bruise.

That’s when Richard showed him one of the frightening videos he’d saved. Richard’s friend immediately went to the police, who got 36 videos, nine audio clips, and 43 photos of injuries as proof.

One really shocking video, which is now public, shows Sheree holding a knife to Richard’s throat.

Speaking to The Sun, Richard said he feels “detached” when he looks back at the videos, sharing: “I felt so trapped for lots of reasons. If it had not been for my friend, I’m not sure what would have happened.”

In March 2023, Sheree got a four-year prison sentence at Hull Crown Court after she admitted to controlling and coercive behaviour and three assaults causing actual bodily harm. Judge Kate Rayfield told the court this was “the worst case of controlling and coercive behaviour I have seen”.

Richard hopes his documentary My Wife, My Abuser: The Secret Footage will make more people aware of the problem. He now helps the Mankind Initiative charity, which supports men who have survived domestic abuse.

He’s also very happy with a new partner. Richard explained: “What I thought were feelings of love and being in love before, I now know that wasn’t love.”

My Wife, My Abuser: The Secret Footage is available to watch on My5.
