Piers Morgan slammed after criticising Mary Earps’ Sports Personality Of The Year win

Piers Morgan is under fire yet again after criticising Mary Earps’ BBC Sports Personality Of The Year win. On Tuesday night the England goalkeeper was awarded the coveted gong for 2023 for being a standout player as the Lionesses reached their first World Cup final in the summer.

Mary, 30, had been rewarded with the Golden Glove for the best goalkeeper at the tournament.“It feels pretty great off the back of a couple of really big years and 2023 has been wild in ways I couldn’t expect,” Earps, who plays football for Manchester United, said as she collected the award.

“I’m really, really grateful.” Earps follows Lionesses team-mate Beth Mead in being named Sports Personality of the Year.

She is the second women’s footballer in succession to win the BBC award, which has seemingly left former Good Morning Britain host Piers miffed.

The presenter took to Twitter on Tuesday night to share his thoughts about the win. He tweeted: “No offence to Ms Earps, but shouldn’t it have been given to someone who actually won something in 2023?”

His words were met with criticism from some users. One tweeted: “‘Sports personality of the year’ not sports winner of the year. You wouldn’t know much about a personality.”

Another wrote: “Behave yourself @piersmorgan. She thoroughly deserved to win it. She played a critical role in helping England to the final and giving them a shot to win it.

“She has done a massive amount for goalkeeping as well as women’s sport so well deserved in my opinion.”

While a third commented: “Poor take this she’s had an unbelievable year and done so much for the women’s game, don’t get why you have to try and sh*t on her win.”

Not letting the criticism get to him, Piers doubled down in a follow-up tweet, adding: “Trying to get my head around two of England’s women footballers winning BBC SPOTY in successive years… while male sporting superstars with great personalities like Rory McIlroy, Frankie Dettori & Ronnie O’Sullivan have never won it.”

This was also followed by several tweets from people condemning his remarks, with one X user explaining how the voting system works.

They wrote: “Basically what happened was one year Beth Mead was voted by the public as winner and then the following year Mary Earps was voted by the public as winner.”

Another person said: “She sold more GK shirts than Pickford. Made girls believe. Brought joy to millions despite making us wake up at stupid times to see the games. She also won the Arnold Clark Cup if that helps your frankly ridiculous argument.”

This isn’t the first time that Piers has made jibes about the celebrated football team. Last July he faced backlash and was branded “pathetic” when he referred to the team as “persons who menstruate”.

Shortly after the Lionesses secured a 2-1 victory over Spain in a Women’s Euro quarter-final, he tweeted: “The England persons who menstruate football team are superb. Well played Lionesses.”
