The Chosen’s boss addresses the future of the series and crucifixion

The fourth season of biblical drama The Chosen is almost here with the series gracing the silver screen to celebrate its premiere.

From its humble beginnings as a crowdfunded show to angel investors to striking a lucrative distribution deal with Lionsgate in 2023, The Chosen’s snowballing success is a fascinating story of how to rip up the rulebook of television-making.

Last year, the drama started airing on the American cable network The CW, bringing the series to its biggest mainstream audience ever as well as getting a SAG-AFTRA exemption to complete season four.

With The Chosen growing in popularity with each season, fans are keen to know about the future of the show.

Daily Express sat down with The Chosen’s creator and writer Dallas Jenkins last year to discuss how long the series could run for and the impending crucifixion scenes.

He said: “I’m not trying to think too much about it because it’s not until season six. So right now, I’m focused on season four and also writing season five.

“But that’s such an important thing and so we thought about it and we’ve written out some ideas several years ago. So we’ve got some good ideas about what we’re going to be doing in season six, which is the crucifixion season.

“But I know the closer I get to it, the more in prayer I will be, the more surrendered I will be because I really want to make sure we communicate to the world what God wants communicated.

Jenkins went on to say: “God has already told the story through the Bible. We’re not trying to say something brand new. We just want to show it in a way that illuminates the Bible even more for people.”

Jenkins has previously said how he has a seven-season story arc planned for The Chosen with the final outing expected to be tackling Holy Week and the resurrection of Jesus (played by Jonathan Roumie).

Fans can also expect a darker season four after Jenkins detailed the forthcoming run with Mary Magdalene star Elizabeth Tabish also sharing details and also Roumie explaining how death would be tackled.

Daily Express also spoke to The Chosen’s executive producer and Hollywood creative Mark Sourian about the success of the show and why it’s resonated so much with audiences across the globe.

He said: “I think, first of all, there’s the Bible as the most archetypal story and the most classic and primal story – the greatest story ever told.

“But what occurs to me is that there are a lot of very dark stories that are being told on cable and the streamers – and those are very good stories and I watch those stories and I really like those stories – but the story of this historical drama about Christ and his disciples is a story really about hope and about light and how to deal with adversity.

“I think right now we live in a time of great uncertainty, great peril and great consternation – and I think what’s great about the series is that it offers hope, it offers guidance in a very real, meaningful way and I think that really resonates with people right now.”

Sourian, whose CV includes serving as a Hollywood producer at DreamWorks and the movies Need For Speed, A Dog’s Purpose and Vince Vaughan film Delivery Man, among others, made the switch from feature films to television when he started working on The Chosen.

Reflecting on the transition from the big screen to the small screen, Sourian said: “I have to say, I’m struck more by the similarities than the differences. I certainly had a perception going into it that it would be somewhat more different but the truth is, [creator] Dallas [Jenkins] – and it is a series – but he approaches it very much as a filmmaker.

“By that, I mean, he has a very specific vision for the story he wants to tell, how he wants to shoot it, how he wants the actors to act and the story he wants to depict Christ and the disciples.

“And so, what occurred to me was that I was working with a filmmaker and so that was very comfortable for me and that was something that got me very excited and that was something that I was used to being a part of.”

The Chosen season 4 episodes 1 & 2 will launch in UK and Irish cinemas on February 1, 2024
