Christmas Eve chaos as M4 forced to close after horror crash

Traffic came to a standstill on the M4 following a crash just hours before Christmas Day.

The accident took place between junction 35 and 34 travelling eastbound, which was closed. Junction 35 westbound was also closed.

South Wales Police posted on X, formerly Twitter: “Emergency services are currently dealing with an road traffic collision on the A473. The road is closed between Cross Inn and Beddau.

“Please use an alternative route. Thank you for your patience.”

Junction 35 is for Bridgend and junction 34 is for the Miskin Interchange. They are understood to have reopened.

It follows a day of travel chaos the day before Christmas Day.

Severn Bridge on the M48 was shut in both directions, with drivers asked to use the Prince of Wales Bridge on the M4 instead. Humber Bridge on the A15 was shut to high-sided vehicles – drivers were instead asked to use the the A15, M18 and A63.

Delays held up multiple National Rail lines. Canterbury East wasblocked until 2.45pm, Abderston until 2.30pm and the line between Westbury and Taunton/Weymouth until the end of the day.
