IThey came, they saw, some even dined – the Macronists – but they haven't won yet. This Friday August 23 was visit day and oral exam at the Élysée. Indeed, before continuing on Monday, with the National Rally, this cycle of discussions with the political forces present in Parliament, Emmanuel Macron received in particular: the New Popular Front (NFP) and its candidate for Matignon, Lucie Castets, the central bloc and republicans. The objective of these interviews – employment – was known: to identify a way, even an alley, to get out of this impasse of an Assembly without a majority and to finally appoint a prime minister.

This unprecedented sequence – one more… – showed that it is indeed Emmanuel Macron who has the key, if not the plan, to escape from this labyrinth in which the political class has been walking in circles for almost six weeks. At this stage, and listening to the participants, these meetings were not useless. Moreover, since the second round of these legislative elections, everyone was able to take stock of the situation. No party or coalition can govern alone.

“This tecton of the three blocs cannot mask the desire for alternation that has been expressed”

In this sense, if the NFP – which was the first – continues to claim power, its discourse has evolved. In front of Emmanuel Macron, Lucie Castets is committed to “building majorities”. That is, finding compromises. However, what is true for this also applies to the central bloc and anyone who intends to control the destiny of France. Except that between making promises and keeping them, there's a gulf. And a party that continues to push back: La France insoumise, a major partner of the NFP. Impossible to forget it.

But there remains another element that Emmanuel Macron, as president – and director of human resources… – must take into account, and this is the meaning of the result of these elections. If the former presidential majority limited the damage more, it did not prevail. And without the power of the Republican front that was launched between the two rounds, the National Rally might have landed even higher.

Certainly, three distinct blocs face each other today. But this new tectonics can in no way mask the desire for change that was expressed at the polls. This is also the message of these legislative elections. And it's all the more powerful because it's based on record attendance. Therein lies the difficulty: finding a personality that can embody this desire for alternation while also having the ability to unite. It's called a five-legged sheep.
