Hindley incident: Air ambulance scrambles to scene as 3-year-old girl hit by van

A three-year-old girl has been hit by a van in Manchester this afternoon, prompting an air ambulance to scramble to the scene.

Police have cordoned off the main road in Hindley as they deal with the incident.

The North West Ambulance Service said the little girl suffered “potentially serious injuries” in the collision. A social media user uploaded footage from the scene showing emergency services swarming the area.

Local Lee Atherton warned: “Avoid market street in Hindley, been a serious accident and all road closed off, been getting worse over last half hour not better.”

The Manchester Evening News reported that an air ambulance was scrambled to the scene just before 2pm this afternoon and that the main high street was blocked going both ways.

The young girl who was reportedly hit by the moving vehicle is not believed to have sustained life-threatening or life-changing injuries whilst the driver has allegedly been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

A witness told the MEN that she saw the little girl sitting on her mother’s knee as she was being checked by paramedics. She added: “Obviously a massive fright for her and all the family. Really hope the little one is okay.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 1.40pm today, officers responded to reports of a road traffic collision between a van and a child on Market Street, Hindley.

“The child was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening or changing. One man has been arrested and enquiries are ongoing.”
