Firefighters are rushing to the scene of a huge fire in Liverpool as bystanders report that a blaze is tearing through a doctors’ surgery on Edge Lane.
Several locals have shared video footage and pictures of the fire – which is so large that plumes of smoke are covering the city skyline.
Emergency services were first called todat at around 2pm and have warned locals in the areas to keep their windows and doors shut.
They have also asked for members of the public to avoid the Edge Lane area.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service is in attendance at Edge Lane, Kensington.
“Crews were alerted at 1.54pm and on scene at 1.59pm. Four fire engines and an aerial appliance are on scene.
“On arrival, crews found a fire located on the roof of a two-storey building and a main branch hose was utilised to begin fighting the fire.
“Ladders were pitched on the roof and firefighters in harnesses continued fighting the fire using two main branch hoses.
“Merseyside Police is in attendance managing road closures and fire crews have gained access to the roof to inspect the fire.
“The incident is ongoing so please avoid the area. Residents and businesses nearby should close windows and doors.
“If you have an existing health condition, keep medicines nearby and if any ill effects occur dial NHS 111 for advice.”
