A magnitude 7 earthquake struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East on Sunday morning, the US seismological service USGS said, with US authorities issuing a tsunami warning that was quickly lifted.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of nearly 50 kilometers in the waters off the Kamchatka Peninsula, about 90 kilometers east of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The tremor was felt even in this regional capital, according to the Russian ministry. “Rescue and fire teams are inspecting the buildings,” she wrote on Telegram. Later, several aftershocks, of lower intensity, were recorded, the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Geophysical Service indicated on its website.
The local branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry also announced that there was “no threat of a tsunami”.
