Huge plumes of smoke were seen rising over a popular Christmas Market after a number of stalls caught fire last night (December 5).
Dramatic pictures show the night sky turning red, with thick grey smoke filling the air near the Red Town Hall in the German capital city of Berlin.
Visitors to the festive market fled the scene after a blaze engulfed two of the wooden stalls offering Christmas-themed goods.
Located in the world-famous Alexander Platz, the market was evacuated as firefighters rushed to the scene to douse the roaring flames.
While the fire crews were intervening, two small gas cartridges exploded, popular German news outlet Bild wrote.
The incident caused two people to be rushed to hospital with injuries. One of the casualties was an employee at the market who suffered minor burns, while the second was a visitor who needed treatment after they inhaled smoke.
In the aftermath of the incident, a spokesman for the Berlin fire department said: “At the Christmas market at the Red Town Hall, two stalls caught fire. The fire is extinguished. The site is under control.”
Local police have now launched a probe to determine what caused the fire.
