Storm Nelson to batter Britain with 641-mile rain and wind blast

Britain is due to be blasted by a huge storm bringing strong winds and heavy rain. The weather front, named by Spanish forecasters as Storm Nelson, is due to blast the nation today and tomorrow.

Maps show a huge deluge of rain measuring around 641 miles will land overnight, with a Met Office weather warning in place for Belfast, where 2.8in of rain could fall.

The rest of the UK is expected to be hit by blustery conditions, showers, thunder and hail as the low-pressure system sweeps in.

It comes after the north and west of the country saw damp conditions this morning, with hill snow in Scotland.

Eastern areas have been seeing some sunshine today so far but this is expected to turn to rain as the evening goes on.

Temperatures are expected to be low across the UK today as it struggles to get above 7C in Scotland, 9C in northern England and 12C in the south and Wales.

The storm will also cause disappointment for holidaymakers heading to Spain or Portugal in the coming days who face a washout Easter holiday, with low temperatures and heavy rain expected in Madrid, Faro and Lisbon.
