Baby name synonymous with ‘old gentlemen’ makes a comeback with new parents

There is a lot of pressure on new parents to give their baby a name, knowing that it will be with them for life.

Parents may look ahead and worry that their child might be teased in school if the names are too outlandish.

As trends change, it helps to return to the names that have stood the test of time.

In favour right now, according to BabyCentre, is one name that was once considered only fit for “old gentlemen”.

The traditional name that made a comeback in 2023 is Abe, but it’s not the only one.

What does Abe mean?

Abe is from the Hebrew avhamon, meaning “father of many”, which has gained enormous popularity in the past couple of years.

Other favourites included Albert and Alfie, and the likes of Basil, Rupert, and Theodore.

The top five baby boy names of 2023 have been:

  1. Muhammad
  2. Noah
  3. Theo
  4. Leo
  5. Oliver.

These were closely followed by:

  • Arthur
  • Jack
  • Freddie
  • George
  • Luca.

Parents wanting to give their sons a name with a strong meaning behind it may be inclined to choose the following names.

Dylan is the God of the sea in Welsh mythology, Thor is the Norse God of thunder and power, and Alistair means defender of the people.

Edward is considered the “guardian of prosperity” while Owen means “well-born, noble”.

Rafferty means “one who will prosper”, and Theodore is regarded as “God’s gift”.

Gender-neutral baby names include Frankie, Harley, Blake, Rowan, River, and Riley.

According to The Bump, Frankie means “truthful”, Harley means “meadow”, and Blake means “black”.

Rowan stands for “little redhead” and River is a “flowing body of water”, meanwhile Riley means “clearing”.

Whichever name is chosen for the little darling, know that it’s up to the parents, and that is that.
