After the departure of Alberto GarzĂłn, the Izquierda Unida force has elected Andalusian Antonio MaĂllo as its new general coordinator by an absolute majority. One departure, that of GarzĂłn, opened a new phase in the formation, in which it seemed that Minister Sira Rego would be his successor. In fact, she is the one who takes her place next to Yolanda Diaz in the Council of Ministers.
We spoke with Alberto Ortiz, political journalist at elDiario.es, about the underlying debate that has taken place and decided these primaries: what kind of relationship Izquierda Unida wants to have with Sumar. There are two positions: one that supported greater independence and was represented by Sira Rego, and one that won with Antonio MaĂllo, who is committed to greater confluence. With Dani Cela, from elDiario.es in Andalusia, we learn more about the career of the next IU coordinator.
