2025 Audi A3 marks the beginning of the end for petrol power

The 2025 Audi A3 has been revealed, extending the small car’s life for another handful of years before it goes electric.

It’s an update of the current, fourth-generation Audi A3, which launched in 2020, but only arrived in Australia in early 2022 after multiple delays.

Audi Australia has yet to confirm when we can expect to see the updated A3 in local showrooms.

Last year, Autocar and other overseas publications reported the current Audi A3 will continue until 2027, ahead of its electric replacement launching the same year.

The most immediate change to the facelifted A3 compared to the outgoing model is the new grille, which has removed all chrome trim and moved the Audi badge towards the top of its frame, overlapping the front bumper.

It appears the lower air intake has also been revised, while there are new faux side vents and a tweaked LED headlight signature – now capable of being adjusted between four settings via the car’s infotainment system.

At the rear, there’s a new rear bumper – hiding the A3’s exhaust tips – and an updated rear light signature to match. 

From what we can see, it looks like the S line badge which has long been affixed to the front guards has moved to the rear, sitting next to the A3 logo as a singular red rhombus.

There will be three new paint finishes offered: District Green (seen here on the hatch); Progressive Red (shown on the sedan); and Daytona Grey, a darker matte colour than Audi’s distinctive Nardo Grey.

In the cabin, changes are minimal, with the existing A3’s 10.5-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system carrying over.

Changes include a new surround for the drive-by-wire gear selector and a rectangular steering wheel centre, replacing the circular horn pad of the outgoing A3.

Carryover safety equipment from the pre-facelift Audi A3 includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control with stop and go.

Audi Australia has not yet detailed powertrain offerings for the 2024 A3, though the fourth-generation model has been available with a pair of petrol engines since its local launch two years ago.

The entry-level Audi A3 TFSI has a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, for combined outputs of 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque, delivered to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

An A3 40 TFSI has also been offered, powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with 140kW and 320Nm, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch auto and driving all four wheels. 

In Australia, the Audi A3 is priced from $49,600 and $52,100 before on-road costs in hatch and sedan guise, respectively.

Pricier, more performance-focused S3 and RS3 models are also available, though updated versions of these have yet to be revealed.
