Bia Haddad Maia of Brazil, world number 17, defeated Daria Kasatkina of Russia, by a margin of 2 sets to 1, to win the WTA 500 title in Seoul, South Korea, this Sunday (22). The hard court event has a purse of US$920,000 (around R$5 million).
On the stage where he burst onto the scene with his first career final in 2017, the São Paulo native defeated the world number 13 by 2 sets to 1, with a comeback, with splits of 1/6, 6/4 and 6/1. The match lasted 1 hour and 50 minutes.
Having lost the first set, Bia lost 3/1 in the second, but managed to recover beautifully. The match was full of errors from both sides – 41 each –, with Beatriz more effective in scoring winners (18 to 11) and taking four of her five break chances compared to her opponent's three of seven.
It was Bia Haddad Maia's first win of the season, and the fourth trophy of her career. The Brazilian now has 12 wins in her last 14 matches.
