Republican debate: With less than six weeks to go until the Republican primaries officially begin in Iowa, party presidential candidates will take to the debate stage in Alabama. Former US president Donald Trump, the frontrunner, is expected to again skip the primetime event.

Banks: The chief executives of the biggest US banks, including JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, will testify before Congress in a Senate hearing on the oversight of Wall Street firms.

Earnings: Distiller Brown-Forman and canned soup producer Campbell Soup will release their latest quarterly results before Wall Street’s opening bell. Online pet retailer Chewy and video game chain GameStop will report after the market closes.

Employment: ADP will release its November employment report, which economists project will show that the US added 130,000 private sector jobs in November, up from 113,000 in October.

Trade: Economists have forecast the US trade deficit to have widened to $64.2bn from $61.5bn in October.
