Border talks with Gibraltar continue apace «Euro Weekly News

Rumors suggest that the Spanish government is keen to reach a final agreement on the border between Spain and Gibraltar before the European elections on June 9.

The matter certainly appears to be gaining momentum, as another high-level meeting took place in Brussels on Thursday, May 16.

The EU, Spain, Great Britain and Gibraltar participated

In attendance were Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, together with Gibraltar Prime Minister Fabian Picardo (and other Gibraltar delegates).

According to the Government of Gibraltar, this was the second meeting of this kind, building on the significant progress made on April 12 and at this latest meeting “discussions took place in a constructive atmosphere, with important breakthroughs and additional areas of agreement. All parties are reassured that the agreement is getting closer.”

The meeting reaffirmed their shared commitment to reaching an agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom to bring confidence, legal certainty and stability to the lives and livelihoods of the people of the entire region, through the economy, trade, protect and improve mobility, environment and social well-being. .

Border crossing is currently more difficult

Since Brexit (ironically 'initiated' by David Cameron), the people of Gibraltar have taken to social media to complain about the treatment received by those wanting to cross the border. difficult to actually cross for those who live in Gibraltar and were not born there or are not EU citizens.

The biggest sticking point for most Gibraltarians is the lack of real information and the fear that Frontex immigration services at the airport and port will include Spanish officers.
