Zurich, Switzerland.- Ecuador's Richard Carapaz withdrew from the Cycling World Cup in Switzerland due to a family emergency.
Carapaz, this year's Tour de France's best climber, announced Monday that he had to travel to Ecuador to be with his daughter who underwent emergency surgery.
“In the last few hours, I was forced to travel to Ecuador to be with my daughter, who had to undergo emergency surgery,” Carapaz said in a statement. “Fortunately, the operation went well. However, it still requires treatment. “Given this family emergency, I have not been able to train for several days and my condition is not up to what Ecuador deserves, both physically and mentally. Therefore, I have taken the decision not to participate in the Zurich 2024 World Cup.”, he added.
The men's road race will bring the curtain down on the world championships on Sunday.
Carapaz, 31, won the road race at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 but was not selected to compete in this summer’s Paris jousts to defend his title. He was the first Ecuadorian to win a grand tour, the 2019 Giro d’Italia. He has won stages at the Giro, Vuelta a España and Tour de France.
