Doctor Says Non-Food Items in Your Home Could Be Making You Gain Weight

A doctor has found that everyday items could be sabotaging your weight loss efforts. According to Professor Franklin Joseph of the Dr Frank Weight Loss Clinic, some common household items could be doing more harm than good when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight.

“Many people don't know that some everyday items contain chemicals known as endocrine disruptors,” he said. “These substances can interfere with your hormones, making it harder to lose weight and easier to gain weight.”

Here are five major culprits you may not even realize could be contributing to your weight gain, along with some practical changes you can make:

1. Plastic containers and bottles

“Plastic products, especially those containing BPA, can mimic oestrogen in the body, leading to hormonal imbalances,” explained Professor Joseph. “These imbalances can cause your body to store more fat, especially around your belly.” Switching to glass or steel containers for storing food and drinks can significantly reduce your exposure to BPA and help prevent these disorders.

2. Cookware with non-stick coating

Non-stick pans often contain PFOA, a chemical linked to weight gain. “Cooking at high temperatures on non-stick pans can release these chemicals into the food, disrupting your metabolism,” said Professor Joseph. He suggests using cast iron or stainless steel cookware as a safer alternative that won’t impact your metabolic health.

3. Air fresheners and scented candles

“Phthalates, which are commonly found in air fresheners and scented candles, can disrupt the function of the thyroid gland, which plays an important role in regulating your metabolism,” warned Professor Joseph. “This disruption can contribute to weight gain over time.” Opting instead for natural air fresheners such as essential oils and unscented candles made from soy or beeswax can help support healthier thyroid function.

4. Personal hygiene products

Many shampoos, lotions and other personal care products contain parabens and triclosan, chemicals that can interfere with hormones like oestrogen and testosterone. “These hormonal imbalances can make it harder to lose excess fat,” warned Professor Joseph. Choosing products labelled “paraben-free” and “phthalate-free” can help you avoid these endocrine disruptors and promote better weight management.

5. Canned goods

“Canned foods are often coated with resins containing BPA, which can leach into food, especially when heated,” said Professor Joseph. “This can lead to hormonal disruptions that promote fat accumulation.” To reduce this risk, Professor Joseph advises choosing fresh or frozen foods, or choosing BPA-free cans where possible.

“These small changes to your daily life can make a big difference to your overall health and weight management,” said Professor Joseph. “By minimising your exposure to these harmful chemicals, you are taking proactive steps towards better long-term outcomes.”
