Spain is facing its ninth European elections since joining the EU in 1985

Spain faces the ninth European elections this Sunday since its accession to the European Union was made official in 1985. From then on, the PSOE and the PP shared victories, with both sides achieving four victories each, although the difference between the two was one or two seats, known as a technical draw.

The Socialists were the last to win these European elections in 2019, when they won 20 seats and 32.84% of the vote with the candidacy of Josep Borrell. Precisely, the current EU High Representative for Foreign Policy also topped the PSOE list in the previous socialist victory in these elections in 2004, with 43.46% of the vote and 25 seats.

To see another victory for the PSOE we have to go back to 1989, with former Foreign Minister Fernando Morán as candidate, when the Socialists won by winning 27 seats and almost 40% of the vote. The PSOE also won the first European elections held in Spain in 1987, after the country joined the European Union the previous year. At that time, Fernando Morán's candidacy obtained 28 seats and 39.06% of the votes.

The last time the PP won these European elections was in 2014 with the candidacy of Miguel Arias Cañete. At this time several parties emerged and the popular parties won with 16 seats and 26.09% of the vote, although they were two deputies ahead of the Socialists, who had 14 seats that year.

The PP also won in the previous elections, in 2009, when its candidate Jaime Mayor Oreja won 24 seats and 42.12% of the vote. On this occasion the PSOE also came very close and received 23 delegates. And in 1999, the PP candidacy led by Loyola de Palacio also won the elections with 27 deputies and almost 40% of the votes. The largest popular victory was in 1994, with the candidacy led by Abel Matutes, when the PP reached 28 seats and 40.12% of the vote.

Besides the two major parties, Izquierda Unida has been the other party that has almost always been represented in these European elections, except for the 2004 elections, the only time they failed to participate.

The 2014 European elections were the first electoral event in which Podemos participated with the candidacy of Pablo Iglesias, whose image was the logo on the ballot paper. He came to the European Parliament with five seats and almost 8% of the votes. That year, Ciudadanos also entered the European Parliament with two seats and 3.16% of the vote. For its part, Vox made an appearance in the Community Chamber in the 2019 elections, with three deputies and 6.20% of the votes. (EP)
