The self-regulatory body of the automotive sector The Automobile Ombudsman has reminded motorists to reserve their vehicles ACUITY well in advance to avoid frustration and potential for fines.

With Many families are planning to go on vacation In the coming weeks, some drivers are at risk of returning to a vehicle with a Expired ITV.

Rebecca Pullan, CEO of The Motor Ombudsman, warned drivers that they are not allowed to use a vehicle on public roads once it is The ITV has expired.

She advised: “The ITV is a legal obligation, an annual check that ensures that your vehicle meets the required road safety requirements and environmental standards.

“Contrary to the misconception of some consumers, there is no grace period once the MOT certificate becomes invalid. That's why we always recommend making an appointment in advance to ensure that the test is carried out well before the deadline.”

Applicable to all vehicles in the UK between the ages of three and 40, the MOT is an annual test to ensure each car is safe enough to be on the roads.

By booking an MOT test before their holiday, the Motoring Ombudsman said drivers can ensure they have a test scheduled before their current result expires.

While motorists are technically allowed to take their vehicle to a garage, driving or even parking a car without an MOT on a public road can result in a £1,000 fine and points on their licence.

Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing Director of The Motor Ombudsman, recommended that drivers who are worried about missing their MOT due date sign up to one of the free reminder services that can send text messages or emails to drivers.

He explained: “There are free and convenient MOT reminder services that can send a text message or email directly to your smartphone to give you advance notice of a [MOT] expired certificate

“So it's worth registering to keep this important date in mind on your vehicle ownership calendar and avoid a last-minute rush to secure a spot on the ramp.”

To help keep your vehicle in top condition all year round, Rebecca also suggested that drivers should book a service six months before their MOT is due to fix any minor faults that may arise.

He added: “As a general rule, it is good practice to take your car to the garage for routine checks at least twice a year. Many drivers like to schedule their MOT and annual service at the same time, as they only make one visit to the garage.

“However, by 'uncoupling' these visits, vehicle owners have a much better chance of spotting small issues before they become serious problems. This can help avoid unwanted costs in the long run.”
