X was again accessed by Brazilian internet users on Wednesday (18), even though the platform is still blocked.
According to the Brazilian Association of Internet and Telecommunications Providers (Abrint), an update to Elon Musk's network caused it to operate differently, using IP addresses linked to Cloudflare's service, making it difficult to block again.
In a note, the Brazilian Association of Internet and Telecommunications Providers (Abrint) clarified that changing the IP address makes blocking X more complicated. Before the decision of the Minister of the Superior Federal Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes to block the social network in Brazil, Elon Musk's company used certain IPs that could be blocked.
Cloudflare services use dynamic IPs that are constantly changing. Blocking dynamic addresses and Cloudflare could result in harm to other services, such as banks and large internet platforms. Play Video
Abrint claims that it is impossible to block dynamic IPs without affecting other services.
IP Change
Cloudflare is a reverse proxy – which intercepts customer requests before they reach the destination server – in the cloud, used by companies to protect and improve the performance of their online services. Abrint points out that, in the case of X, the use of the platform resulted in a change in the IP of the social network and allowed a more efficient resistance to blocking.
Due to the constant change of virtual addresses, blocking actions by internet providers become difficult. “Blocking Cloudflare means blocking not only X, but also a series of other services that rely on this infrastructure, which can have a negative impact on the internet as a whole,” said a note from Abrint.
Abrint claims internet providers cannot take action on their own without official guidance from the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel).
Block
Alexandre de Moraes ordered the total suspension of social network X in Brazil after the platform failed to comply with a court order on August 28 to appoint legal representation in Brazil within 24 hours. By August 31, the platform was completely offline in the country.
The minister also blocked Starlink's accounts in Brazil, as a way to guarantee payment of fines imposed on X for failing to comply with the STF's decision. The companies are owned by billionaire Elon Musk.
Just last week, the company paid Union R$11 million from Starlink and R$7.2 million from X. Following the payments, Alexandre de Moraes ordered the unblocking of Starlink's accounts and financial assets in Brazil.
