French tennis star Benoit Paire couldn't help but laugh after his disastrous performance at the Rennes Open in France on Wednesday.
The former world number 18 was easily dispatched by eighth seed Jacob Fearnley, the British star who fought hard against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon this yearin the first round of the competition.
Fearnley won 6-1, 6-0, winning his last 10 games in a row. It was a convincing victory that left his opponent with no choice but to laugh at his own performance.
Paire scored just 21 points in the entire match, and his 22-year-old opponent broke his serve six times.
The match lasted just 37 minutes, with Paire losing the first set in 19 minutes and then beating that time in the second set, losing 6-0 in 18 minutes.
The Frenchman double-faulted on match point, prompting boos from the crowd. Paire sarcastically blew kisses after his poor performance before shaking Fearnley's hand and heading to the locker room.
After the match, Paire took to social media to laugh at himself and the level of his performance. He tweeted a series of laughing emojis just minutes after the match, which could suggest he is already drawing a line under the performance rather than dwelling on the defeat.
The match did not win the crown of shortest match in history. ATP That's history, though. At the 2014 Miami Open, Finland's Jarkko Nieminen beat Bernard Tomic in just 28 minutes, setting a record that will likely be hard to beat — fortunately for Paire.
