Chicago:

At least four people were shot dead on a train in the US city of Chicago on Monday, police said, and a suspect was arrested shortly after the mass shooting.

Police said they responded to a 911 call early Monday morning and arrived at the Forest Park train station where they found four victims.

“Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and the fourth was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was later pronounced dead,” police said in a statement.

Gun violence is rampant in the United States, a country where there are more guns than people. Attempts to restrict gun rights always face stiff political resistance.

The statement said Chicago police released a description of the alleged perpetrator based on surveillance footage, and the suspect was later arrested and a firearm was seized from him.

“This appears to be an isolated incident that does not pose an immediate threat to the public,” the statement said.

Chicago has one of the largest public transportation networks in the United States, with more than 317,000 people riding its rail system on an average weekday, according to the Chicago Transit Authority.

“It's a terrible situation. It's definitely something you don't want to see in the morning. It's Monday, a holiday,” police officer Christopher Chin told reporters, referring to the United States holiday of Labor Day.

There have been at least 378 mass shootings (defined as a shooting in which at least four people were injured) across the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

According to the GVA, at least 11,463 people have died as a result of firearms use.

In June, the U.S. surgeon general issued a historic warning declaring gun violence a “public health crisis” and calling for sweeping gun control measures that have historically been rejected by political opposition.

The report says that in recent years, firearms have become the leading cause of death for Americans aged 1 to 19, surpassing cars.
