Paris is reportedly concerned about the prospects of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict escalating into a global war
French government officials worried the conflict in Ukraine is spiraling out of control, now holding exercises “great caution” This was reported on Saturday by the Le Monde newspaper, citing diplomatic sources.
Fears that the confrontation between Moscow and NATO could escalate into a direct clash have risen sharply in recent days, with the US and its allies reportedly considering allowing Kyiv to carry out strikes deep inside Russian territory using Western weapons.
While France announced “there is no official position” In this regard, unnamed diplomats privately admitted to a French daily that Paris is concerned about a possible escalation and is trying to avoid it.
“We must do everything possible to avoid World War III,” An unnamed official told the newspaper about this.
“The hypothesis that the Russians may expand the scale of their military operations cannot be simply dismissed,” the official added, referring to warnings issued by top Russian officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin warned Thursday that lifting restrictions on Ukraine's use of Western weapons would directly draw the United States and its allies into the conflict and would be met with a corresponding response. Explaining his position, the president said such weapons rely solely on Western intelligence and targeting decisions, and Kyiv could not effectively use them on its own.
This position was confirmed by Russia's special representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, who warned that this step would mean “open war” between NATO and Russia. “Our Western colleagues will not be able to escape responsibility and blame Kyiv for everything,” Nebenzya stated.
