German football legend Franz Beckenbauer, who twice won the World Cup with his country, has died at the age of 78.
Beckenbauer, who was known as Der Kaiser for his refined playing style in midfield and defence, captained West Germany to the 1974 World Cup and lifted the trophy again as manager in 1990.
He starred for German club Bayern Munich more than 400 times in a trophy-laden playing career that ended in the US.
He continued to exert his influence in football once he had retired as a player, a major figure at Bayern, world governing body Fifa and at the German Football Association.
The news marks the death of yet another footballing great in recent years, following Sir Bobby Charlton last year, Brazilian icon Pelé in 2022 and Diego Maradona in 2020.
