Inflation: Economists expect that the core consumption expenditures price index, an inflation measure closely watched by the Federal Reserve, increased 0.4 per cent in January. On an annual basis, the core figure is expected to tick down to 2.8 per cent from 2.9 per cent in December.
Jobless claims: New applications for unemployment aid are forecast to have increased to 210,000 in the week ended February 24, compared with 201,000 claims a week prior.
Earnings: Consumer goods company Hormel Foods, German sandal maker Birkenstock and electronics retailer Best Buy will report before the bell and give insight into how consumer spending held up in the most recent quarter. PC maker Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise report after the bell.
Fedspeak: Atlanta Federal Reserve president Raphael Bostic will discuss the economic outlook, monetary policy and the state of the banking industry at a fireside chat at the 2024 Banking Outlook conference. Cleveland Fed president Loretta Mester will deliver a keynote speech at Columbia University. Chicago Fed president Austan Goolsbee will discuss monetary policy at an event hosted by Princeton University.
