Google The Pixel 9 series debuted on August 13 and includes four models: Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XLAnd Pixel 9 Pro Foldable. The smartphone line was initially thought to be incompatible with Qi2, which is the latest wireless charging technology. However, it turns out that the phones are compatible. According to the report, the Pixel 9 series supports Qi2 wireless charging, but with caveats that may require the purchase of separate accessories, especially if users want to charge it while attached magnetically.
Google Pixel 9 Series Qi2 Support
IN reportAndroid Authority reports that the Google Pixel 9 series supports Qi2 wireless charging, but not magnetic. The charging standard was developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and released in 2023. Until now, it was believed that in order to use this technology, smartphones and other devices must have a magnetic ring – a key component – on the back to attach them to a wireless charger.
However, tipster Mishaal Rahman proposed that devices can be compatible with Qi2 despite the lack of this important component. Qi1 is said to have no requirements related to the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), which is based on Apple's MagSafe technology. There are also different Qi2 logos to differentiate devices that support magnetic and non-magnetic wireless charging, with icons with and without a ring, respectively.
Google has confirmed to Android Authority that its Pixel 9 devices do support Qi2 wireless charging standards. Additionally, users who want to use magnetic charging can purchase a separate case with a magnetic ring attached to the back of the smartphone. However, it is unclear whether the Pixel 9 supports all of Qi2's features, given the lack of a magnetic ring.
Additionally, all Qi2 chargers are backwards compatible with Qi-certified devices, further complicating the question of to what extent Google's flagship smartphones support the latest wireless charging technology.
