The Ministry of Health has unveiled a plan to tackle rising temperatures, introducing an updated risk map that takes into account mortality risks associated with extreme heat.

Regular updates will be available on the Ministry's website (www.sanidad.gob.es), and people can subscribe to personalized temperature forecasts. The plan prioritizes protecting vulnerable demographic groups, such as the elderly, pregnant women and outdoor workers. Strikingly, between 2000 and 2009 there was an increase in mortality risk of 9.1 to 10.7 percent per degree above the health threshold, with 13,119 deaths attributed to high temperatures during this period. Furthermore, estimates show excess mortality due to temperatures between 2015 and 2023, with 21,774 deaths recorded. 2022 saw the highest number of deaths at 4,789, followed by 2023 with 3,009 heat-related deaths.
