“We currently have more than 500 officers in the field of personal protection,” BKA President Holger Münch told the German editorial network (RND). “Another 100 will be added in the federal election year. Then another 100. So the department is growing.”
Threats against federal politicians continue to rise
Münch added: “This is not only related to the increasing dangers at home, but also abroad – for example with Ukraine or the Gaza war.” The BKA is responsible for protecting the Federal President, the Federal Chancellor, the Federal Ministers and the leading members of the Bundestag.
Overall, the threat to federal politicians continues to increase. This is due not only to the rise of right-wing extremism and Islamism, but also to Russia's attack on Ukraine and its combined attacks on the West, and finally a new war in the Middle East after the terrorist attacks by the Islamic group Hamas on October 7 last year.
