It's time to say goodbye. We racist politicians never retire. We continue. Thank you so much. Long live Spain! pic.twitter.com/SituxoIRgB — José Manuel García-Margallo (@MargalloJm) June 12, 2024
José Manuel García-Margallo took his first steps in politics in the last months of Francoism. In 1977 he was elected deputy in the Cortes under the party Democratic Center Union (UCD). In 1986 he was elected deputy for Valencia, but under the acronym of the Popular Coalition, which did not happen until 1993 when he was re-elected together with the PP. He then made the leap to Europe in 1999 as a Member of the European Parliament as Vice-Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. His peak period in Spanish politics went hand in hand with his time in Moncloa. He was appointed on December 22, 2011 Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the government of Mariano Rajoy. A position he held until November 4, 2016. Two years later, in 2018, Margallo personally put himself forward as a candidate to take over the leadership of the Popular Party together with those of other heavyweights of the group, such as Pablo Casado, Soraya Saenz de Santamaría or María Dolores de Cospedal, among others. Already in 2019 he stood as a candidate for the European Parliament elections, number seven on the PP list, as a result of which he was elected and won a seat. To date, at the end of this last term, Margallo has been Vice-President of the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly and Member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs; of the delegation to the EU-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee and of the delegation to the CARIFORUM-EU Parliamentary Committee. He is also a substitute in the International Trade Commission and in the delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee. At the national level, José Manuel García-Margallo was a regular contributor the radio program 'El Ágora' with Aimar Bretos on Cadena Serwhere he shared a debating table with the founder and former leader of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias; and the former First Vice President of the Government, Carmen Calvo.
