What is corneal trauma?

The cornea is the tissue that covers the front of the eye and is translucent. It focuses images onto the retina using the lens of the eye. Any injury to the outer layer of the eye or the cornea is called a corneal injury, according to the report. Penn Medicine.

Symptoms of corneal damage

  • Blurred vision
  • Pain or burning in the eye
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Redness
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Watery eyes
  • Feeling like there is something in the eye

Possible Causes of Corneal Injuries

Corneal damage can occur for a variety of reasons, including:

1. Abrasions

A corneal abrasion is a superficial scratch on the cornea, which is called the window of the eye. It can be scratched by sand, wood, metal particles, dust, dirt, contact lensesor even the edge of a piece of paper. Common symptoms of a corneal abrasion include pain, blurred vision, tearing, redness, photophobia (sensitivity to light), and headache.

2. Chemical influence

Any contact with acids, alkalis or other chemicals can damage the cornea. This usually happens when your eyes come into contact with any liquid. However, it can also happen when you rub your eyes while working with chemicals. If there is redness or you feel a burning sensation, you should see a doctor immediately. It can also cause symptoms such as tingling, pain, swelling of the eyelids, blurred vision or watery eyes.

3. Contact lenses

Overuse, poor hygiene or fit, or wearing lenses for long periods of time can cause corneal scratches or infections. While most of these problems are considered treatable, if they persist, you should see a doctor.

4. Dry eyes

Dry eyes are a common condition that occurs when tears are not enough to lubricate the eyes. This condition can be very uncomfortable. Severe dry eye can cause eye inflammation, corneal surface abrasions, corneal ulcers, and vision loss if left untreated.

5. UV radiation

Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can cause corneal burns (photokeratitis). Chronic exposure to UV rays can damage the cornea and conjunctiva of the eyes.
