MMC also said the officers had since handed over their firearms to the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID) for ballistics testing.

“We need to check where the shots were coming from as there have been allegations that members of the public were shooting at police.

“Then the question we asked, [is why] No casualties were observed in any of them [sides of] private security and [the authorities],” He said.

Zwaku assured residents that the city is “using all means to pursue the criminals,” as law enforcement is currently investigating “several leads.”

A A memorial service was held for Mphahlele on Wednesday at the Sankopano Community Centre in Alexandra.

Among those present were EFF deputy chairman Floyd Shivambu, party treasurer-general Omphile Maotwe, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, Joburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda and council speaker Margaret Arnolds.

The funeral of the slain adviser will take place on Friday.

EFF condemns murder

The EFF described Mphahlele as a dedicated community leader who has dedicated his life to improving the lives of people in Johannesburg and Alexandra.

The party called on law enforcement agencies to bring those responsible for his tragic death to justice.

“The EFF will not rest until those responsible for the death of our fighter are brought to justice.

“The organization has deployed its structures to support the family. We call for calm and discipline from our members and the public as we seek justice,” the Red Beret said in a statement.
