John Woo Developing 'Semi-Musical' Project as Next

When you think of John Woo, you think of action. With movies like Murderer, Hard-boiled, Face to face/outside, Mission Impossible 2and more, the director has created some of the greatest action films in cinema history, but his next project will be a major departure. In conversation with EmpireJohn Woo has confirmed that his next film will be “semi-musical» made in collaboration with Sparksa pop and rock duo formed by brothers Ron and Russell Mayle.

«My next project is actually half musical,“Wu said.”I'll be working with the Sparks brothers, who wrote the script and the songs – we're just starting to work on some changes to the script.“The director then joked that it was”This will be my first film where I don't have to hire a stuntman.“Wu had wanted to do a musical for a long time and even came close to directing an adaptation The Phantom of the Opera starring John Travolta in the '90s. Sparks recently posted a photo with John Woo, hinting at the project.

The hashtag mentions X Crusaderproject announced Focus Features two years ago, which was described simply as “musical epic.“I'm intrigued.

Woo's last film was in English remake his own Classic action movie from 1989: Killer. New version of the stars Nathalie Emmanuel as Zee, a mysterious assassin known as the Queen of the Dead. When she refuses to kill a young blind woman (Diana Silvers) on orders from her handler Finn (Sam Worthington), her world crumbles and she finds herself on the run, attracting the attention of police investigator C (Omar Sy). Unfortunately (and perhaps predictably), the remake has received mixed reviews, including from our own Alex Madey.

«As evidenced by Silent night, John Woo still has something in the tank, but Murderer it's a complete failure in every sense,“Written by Madi.”While it's interesting to see how a director can execute the same concept in two completely different ways, Murderer maybe the most unnecessary remake since Gus Van Sant Psycho. Killer The worst thing an action movie can be: boring. Avoid this movie at all costs unless you're a John Woo fan, and even then you'll be disappointed that you've waited over thirty years for it.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here.
