Aznar's FAES now supports an agreement for the judiciary that it considers balanced
In an editorial, the Foundation for Analysis and Social Studies, chaired by former PP government president José María Aznar, assessed the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary as “compelling after a five-year extension.” He then explained that this pact is supported by “legal, constitutional and purely functional reasons with a Justice on the verge of collapse”, although he also justifies the blockade carried out by the PP over the past five and a half years in “the refusal of the government to simultaneously commit to changes.”
The FAES now claims that the PP “has not been satisfied with abstract promises and has avoided completing a takeover through which the government threatened to reduce the strengthened congressional majorities required in vowel nominations.”
Aznar's foundation states that the PP thus “guarantees the principle of the separation of powers and European verification of the promised reforms, which must be implemented immediately.” But he also warns: “We must be vigilant to enforce what has been committed. In a democracy, the logic of agreement and negotiation is mandatory. The most important thing is respect for constitutional boundaries and a minimum of good faith. The fact that Sanchismo has ignored these two premises on so many occasions does not change the main thesis. Moreover, this time it is the negotiation European made. It will not be so easy to falsify the clauses that have just been signed.”
The FAES editorial points out that “the PP has done well by resisting pressure to accept compromises that would jeopardize transparency and the strengthening of judicial independence. Every time he said no to one of those offers, wrapped in threats, he was accused of violating the Constitution.”
