The general secretary of Esquerra Republicana, Marta Rovira, will return to Catalonia on Friday, along with five other former suspects in the Tsunami case. The party has organized a welcome event at 9am in a town near the French border, Catallops (Girona), which will be the first of a series of events, expressions of support and tributes with which the party expects the return of its current leader after six years on the run in Switzerland. Rovira's return is awaited in the republican ranks, will help calm the waters within a party that has seen several crises They have overlapped since the 12-M electoral debacle and that the future leadership must decide in a congress in November whether to give the green light for the inauguration of Salvador Illa.

ERC announced in a note that Rovira will arrive alongside deputy Ruben Wagensberg, journalist Jesús Rodriguez and independence activists Oleguer Serra and Josep Campmajor. They were all accused of terrorism in the case brought by the National Court last Monday. The end of that investigation implied the removal of the last obstacle, so that Rovira could benefit from the amnesty for the leaders of the trial, and where he was accused of a crime of disobedience. The event, also organized by Òmnium Cultural, will take place in a small municipality of 300 inhabitants, where Esquerra has governed since 2011 and has a Wagensberg family.

Rovira had announced last Monday in an interview on RAC-1 that he was willing to return to Spain to participate in the Esquerra Women's Assembly on Saturday. The trip, which they will make by car from Switzerland, has been brought forward and therefore the Secretary General will also be able to participate personally tomorrow in the party executive and the National Council, where theoretically the responsibilities for the campaign against the Maragall brothers lie, who mock the Alzheimer's disease from which the former president of the Generalitat suffered.

In that case, the secretary general will dramatize on Saturday her new status as effective leader of the party after Oriol Junqueras left the presidency last June. He former vice president She wants to run for president again during the November conclave, while she is the visible face of the internal movement that wants a change of faces at the top of the formation. Rovira fled to Switzerland in March 2018 to avoid responding to judge Pablo Llarena, who had released her a month earlier on bail of 60,000 euros after hearing her testimony about the events of the 1-O referendum. Despite the distance, however, he has been the party's number two and support for his management during that time has been almost unanimous.

For the time being, a welcome party will also take place in Vic, Rovira’s birthplace. Sources from the Palau de la Generalitat explain that the acting president, Pere Aragonès, will formally receive both the secretary-general and the other former defendants who have returned from Switzerland next week. A similar event is also being prepared in Parliament.
