New York's governor said Wednesday she had called for the expulsion of China's consul general in New York, Huang Ping, after her former aide was indicted in a U.S. court on criminal charges of working for Beijing.
“I expressed my desire to expel the Consul General of the People's Republic of China and the mission in New York, and I was informed that the Consul General was no longer serving at the mission in New York,” said Kathy Hochul, New York's top official.
However, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller denied reports of the expulsion of Chinese Special Representative Huang Ping, calling the official's departure “the end of a regularly scheduled rotation.”
The diplomat arrived in America's most populous city after serving as China's ambassador to Zimbabwe.
