Team GB boss Andy Anson has fiercely defended Team GB's gold medal haul at the Paris Olympics, despite their lowest total since Athens 2004.

British athletes won just 14 gold medals in France, finishing seventh in the medal standings.

However, their total medal count of 65 surpassed that of Tokyo three years ago and equalled the total won by Great Britain in London 2012.

“It was an incredibly competitive Olympic Games,” Anson said. “We passed the 1,000 medal mark during the event, which is incredible and something to celebrate.”

“The scale of success is important in terms of the resonance it has across the country and the impact it has on our communities.

“It's disappointing to finish seventh in the medal standings. We would have liked to be in the top five again, but the overall number and breadth of medals we won deserves praise. So the final message is: Go Los Angeles.”
