Why the Orioles Will Cover the Spread/Win

The Orioles still have a chance to win the AL East. But they need to string together a few wins, including a win over the Red Sox. This offense is certainly explosive enough to do that.

Gunnar Henderson passes Cal Ripken Jr. as the franchise leader in home runs by a shortstop. Notably, he continues to hit baseball and now hopes to continue putting up results against the Sox. Henderson struggled against the Sox, batting .235 with 20 hits, five home runs, 15 RBI, and 15 runs scored in 24 games. So there's work to be done.

Adley Rutschman is still one of the most reliable hitters in baseball. However, that hasn’t translated into much success against the Sox. Rutschman is batting .242 with 30 hits, four home runs, 16 RBI, and 16 runs batted in over 32 games against the Sox. He’s also batting just .217 with five hits, three RBI, and two runs batted in over five games this season against Boston. Anthony Santander is batting .261 with 67 hits, 14 home runs, 49 RBI, and 38 runs batted in over his career against the Sox. However, he’s batting just .220 with nine hits, one home run, five RBI, and four runs batted in over his last 10 games this season.

Povich will try to repeat his last outing. In fact, he hopes to repeat what he did against the Red Sox in his last outing, when he went 6 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs and six hits while striking out six in a Red Sox loss.

The Orioles will cover the spread if Henderson can set the table, Rutschman can walk it, and Santander can hit a baseball into the seats. Then they'll need a good outing from Povich.

Why the Red Sox Will Cover the Spread/Win

The Red Sox haven't had much luck this season, as they've been hanging around for a wild card spot. However, they have a good chance to turn things around as they face the O's this week. They need their two best offensive players to make things work.

It all starts with Jared Duran, who is the leadoff hitter. So far, he is batting just .200 with nine hits, one home run, five RBI and six runs batted in against the Orioles. Rafael Devers remains one of the best players in the game. He has also had moderate success against the O's. So he is coming in at .291 with 130 hits, 20 home runs, 73 RBI and 69 runs batted in over 111 career games against the O's.

Crawford is hoping to avoid making mistakes in this game. He's now hoping to have more success against the O's after giving up three earned runs and two hits while striking out four and walking one in a 5 1/3 inning loss to the Orioles on Aug. 18.

The Red Sox will cover the spread if Durant can be patient at the plate and either draw a walk or find a good pitch to hit. Then they need Crawford to make his pitches and fool the Orioles batters.

Orioles-Red Sox Final Prediction and Picks

The Orioles lead the season series 7-3, including a three-game sweep at Fenway Park earlier this season. Amazingly, they have covered the run line in all seven of those wins. The Orioles are 79-65 against the run line this season, while the Sox are 65-78. Likewise, the O's are 42-27 against the run line on the road, while the Red Sox are 25-47 at home, including a humiliating loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. But Povich has struggled on the road, while the Sox have shown resilience at home. The Red Sox are also struggling to protect their playoff hopes. Pick them to cover the run line.

Final Prediction and Picks for the Orioles-Red Sox Matchup: Boston Red Sox: +1.5 (-184)
