The European Football Championship, held in Germany, will feature 82 nationalised players, that is, players who are part of a team from a country in which they were not born. At the same time, far-right parties, such as Marine Le Pen’s, are asking why there are so many black players representing France, or public television asking viewers if they would prefer to have more white players in their team. This tension, which ignores how European societies have changed and which puts nations above people, is being transferred to the fans, to the stands, and has led some stars, always reserved, to talk openly about politics.
